Our Language Trip to Dublin – Learning Beyond the Classroom

04.05.2026

Our week in Dublin was an unforgettable experience that combined cultural discovery, personal growth, and plenty of shared moments as a group. From the moment we arrived in Dublin, we were immersed in Irish life, staying with host families and experiencing everyday routines in a new environment.

Living with local families gave us valuable insights into Irish culture and hospitality. Even though we spent much of our time exploring the city independently, having a place to return to each evening helped us feel safe and welcome. These experiences allowed us to step outside our comfort zones and adapt to a different way of life.

During the week, we took part in a variety of organised excursions. A guided city tour helped us understand the rich history of Dublin, bringing important events to life in the very places where they happened. We also visited destinations such as Kilkenny Castle and explored coastal areas like Howth and Bray. Especially the time spent by the sea left a lasting impression, as we enjoyed the beautiful landscapes and fresh air.

Outside the organised programme, we explored Dublin on our own. Walking through the city, discovering shops, cafés, and hidden corners, became one of the highlights of the trip. Whether we were shopping, trying local food, visiting museums, or simply wandering through the streets, we experienced the city from a student’s perspective. Even everyday activities, such as buying snacks or using public transport, became part of our learning experience.
One of the most valuable aspects of the trip was learning beyond the classroom. While language lessons were part of the programme, we quickly realised that the real progress happened in everyday situation: talking to locals, ordering food, or finding our way around the city. These interactions helped us improve our listening and communication skills in a natural and practical way.

At the same time, we gained important life skills. Managing our budget in a city where the cost of living is noticeably higher than in Austria made us more aware of how to handle money responsibly. Travelling independently, organising our time, and making decisions as a group strengthened our confidence and teamwork.

Of course, the trip was also about having fun together. Activities like bowling, watching sports in a pub atmosphere, or simply spending time with friends made this experience special. These shared moments brought us closer as a class and created memories that will last far beyond the trip.

Looking back, our time in Dublin was much more than a school excursion. It was a week full of new experiences, cultural insights, and personal development. We returned not only with a better understanding of Ireland and its history, but also with greater independence, stronger friendships, and a new perspective on learning.
